DNR Teaches Students to Plant
Seventh grade science classes at Meredith Middle School are planting trees with the Department of Natural Resources.
They’re learning how to plant and mulch a tree, and the benefits the trees will provide. The trees will shade the school and block the wind, reducing heating and air conditioning costs, and they will provide a habitat for birds and animals.
The presence of trees on school grounds has also been shown to improve learning.
A small group of students is currently working on a self-watering system for the trees and the trees will be a tool for science teachers to utilize in curriculum for years to come.
The project was funded with a DNR grant.
